Plans to provide overtime allowance to police members
The government is planning to introduce overtime allowance for police members who work extra working hours. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that police members from the rank of inspector to constable may be brought under this facility under a special policy.
He said this at the Prime Minister's special welfare meeting organized on the occasion of 'Police Week-2026' at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (May 10).
The Home Minister said that the government is seriously considering the issue of overtime allowance to boost the morale of police members who have been on duty for a long time and improve the quality of service. Work is underway to formulate a special policy for this.
He said that currently many police members do not get the desired promotion despite serving for 40 years. Considering this reality, there is also a plan to give honorary promotions to some members during retirement through a special policy. In this case, the issue of promotion from constable to ASI, from ASI to SI and from SI to Inspector will be taken into consideration.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that reasonable demands will be met within the financial capacity of the government to make the police force a more modern, public welfare-oriented and efficient force.
He also said that due to long working hours and pressure, the central and divisional police hospitals will be made more modern and up-to-date to protect the physical and mental health of police members. Initiatives will also be taken to build new hospitals where necessary.
Stating that the government has a priority in resolving the housing crisis, the Home Minister said that the government is also working on the construction of buildings for police members, expansion of offices and land acquisition.
Regarding the law and order situation, he claimed that the situation in the country has visibly improved in the last two months. Special operations against terrorists, extortionists and drug dealers are continuing.
At the time, he said that the nature of crime has also changed with the development of information technology. Therefore, emphasis is being placed on modern training and technical skills acquisition of police members.
The Home Minister said that a committee has already been formed to formulate modern laws to prevent gambling, online gambling, cybercrime and money laundering. In addition, initiatives are being taken to create a new legal framework by amending and supplementing existing laws to stop 'mob culture'.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was present as the chief guest at the event. In addition, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, IGP Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and Additional IGP Khandaker Rafiqul Islam also spoke.
