A court has delivered the verdict in another plot corruption case against the family of the former prime minister, who was removed from power in an uprising; this time Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana and Rehana’s daughter, British MP Tulip Siddiq, have also been convicted and sentenced.

Sheikh Rehana, daughter of Bangabandhu, has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Her sister Sheikh Hasina has received a five-year prison sentence, and her daughter Tulip has been sentenced to two years.

The verdict was delivered on Monday, December 1 at around 11.45am by the court of Judge Md Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4.

The case alleged that Sheikh Rehana obtained a 10-katha plot in the Purbachal New Town Project through corruption, by “concealing information and violating the law” despite having a house, flat or residential facilities in Dhaka city. Sheikh Hasina “abused her power” to “assist” her sister in obtaining the plot. British MP Tulip Siddiq “influenced” her aunt Sheikh Hasina to secure the plot for her mother Rehana.

In three other plot corruption cases related to Purbachal, another court last Thursday sentenced Awami League president Sheikh Hasina to a total of 21 years of rigorous imprisonment. Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul were each sentenced to five years.

Earlier, on November 17, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death in a case over crimes against humanity during the attempt to suppress the July uprising.

Two more plot corruption cases relating to Purbachal are still at the testimony stage in court. In those two cases, along with Sheikh Hasina and Tulip, Tulip’s brother Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby and Azmira Siddiq Ruponti are also accused.
