PM confers Vice Admiral rank on new Navy chief

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday (July 23) formally conferred the rank of Vice Admiral on newly appointed Chief of the Bangladesh Navy Khondkar Misbah Ul Azim, marking the start of his three-year tenure as the country's naval chief.

The insignia-pinning ceremony was held at the Armed Forces Division at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka Cantonment, where the prime minister and outgoing Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan jointly placed the Vice Admiral rank badges on Misbah Ul Azim's shoulders, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The ceremony was attended by senior civil and military officials, including the Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd.) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Quartermaster General Lt Gen Md Shahinur Rahman, Principal Staff Officer Lt Gen Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, Military Secretary Maj Gen Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defence appointed Rear Admiral Misbah Ul Azim as Chief of the Bangladesh Navy for a three-year term ending July 22, 2029. According to the ISPR, he was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and assumed command of the Navy on Thursday.

Commissioned into the Executive Branch in 1989 after joining the Bangladesh Navy in 1987, Vice Admiral Misbah Ul Azim completed his initial military training with distinction in the Royal Malaysian Navy. He later earned a PhD in Maritime Governance and held a wide range of command, staff and training appointments during his nearly four decades of service.

For his distinguished military career, he has received several honours, including the Noubahini Padak (NBP), Nou-Paradarshita Padak (NPP) and the National Integrity Award.
