PM expresses sorrow over waterlogging suffering in Chattogram
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed sorrow over the extreme suffering of the city residents due to the severe waterlogging in Chattogram. He said that he has spoken to the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation in this regard. The government is working to normalize the situation as soon as possible.
The Prime Minister said this in response to a question from Sayeed Al Noman, MP for Chattogram-10 constituency, on the 24th day of the first session of the 13th National Parliament on Wednesday (April 29). Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presided over the session.
The Prime Minister said that a large part of Chittagong city is now submerged in water, as a result of which people are suffering greatly. The concerned administration and the City Corporation are working together to deal with the situation. However, the waterlogging has taken such a large scale that it will take some time to resolve it.
He also said that I sincerely express my sorrow over the suffering of the people of Chattogram. Efforts are being made to bring people out of this disaster as soon as possible.
Describing waterlogging as a long-standing problem, the Prime Minister said, "Waterlogging has been our problem for a long time. A politician was an expert in solving this problem, the late President Ziaur Rahman. He created water reservoirs and eliminated floods and waterlogging by digging canals across the country. We need to go back to that canal digging program and the government has already started it.
He said, the flow of water is being obstructed due to dumping of plastic, polythene and waste in drains and canals, which is one of the main reasons for waterlogging. Therefore, it is very important to increase public awareness.
The Prime Minister also called on the members of parliament to play a role in creating awareness on this issue. He said, the government is not alone, this problem cannot be completely solved without the cooperation of the people.
He also said that initiatives have been taken to provide three-month assistance to the farmers of the haors affected by the ongoing rains and floods.
