Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit Trishal in Mymensingh today to inaugurate the nationally organised celebrations marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The event is being held in Trishal — a place deeply associated with the poet’s memory — for the first time in nearly two decades at the national level.

According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Tarique Rahman will leave his Gulshan residence by road at 9:00am on Saturday (May 23) for Trishal. The upazila has already taken on a festive atmosphere ahead of his arrival, with local administration officials, cultural organisations, political activists and residents actively participating in the preparations.

Although Nazrul’s birth anniversary falls on May 25, the schedule was adjusted this year in consideration of the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. As a result, the three-day celebration officially begins today.

The prime minister will formally inaugurate the festival and deliver a speech at the traditional Nazrul stage located at the Government Nazrul Academy grounds. The venue and surrounding areas have been decorated with lights, arches and elaborate installations, while security measures have also been significantly tightened.

A key role in bringing the national celebration to Trishal was played by Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Liton, member of parliament for Mymensingh-7 (Trishal). He had repeatedly raised the demand in parliament for hosting the national Nazrul celebration in Trishal, leading to the government’s decision this year.

Alongside inaugurating the Nazrul celebration, the prime minister will also launch the re-excavation work of the Dharar Khal canal in Kanhar area. The canal excavation project was originally inaugurated in 1979 by former President Ziaur Rahman.

According to the official itinerary, Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the canal project at Bailer Union around noon before opening the three-day Nazrul celebration at 3:00pm at the Trishal Nazrul stage. Later in the afternoon, he is scheduled to attend an organisational meeting of BNP units from Mymensingh North, South and Metropolitan areas at the Trishal Nazrul Auditorium.

He is expected to leave for Dhaka around 6:30pm.
