PM inaugurates 500-bed extension of Neurosciences Hospital

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday (August 15) inaugurated a new 500-bed extension of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon, doubling the facility’s total bed capacity to 1,000.

The prime minister formally opened the 15-storey building at around 10:15am. His wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, along with senior hospital officials, doctors and other officials, attended the inauguration ceremony.

The new building has three basement levels for parking and service facilities, while the remaining 12 floors house patient wards, operating theatres and diagnostic units.

The facility includes 40 ICU beds, 24 post-operative beds and 112 cabins, significantly expanding the hospital’s capacity to treat neurological and neurosurgical patients, particularly those requiring specialised and critical care.

The expansion is expected to ease pressure on the country’s major specialised neurological treatment centre and improve access to advanced care for patients suffering from complex neurological conditions.

The National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital was founded with the aim of expanding specialised neurological services in Bangladesh. Its foundation stone was laid on October 23, 2006, by then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The institution subsequently became one of the country’s leading centres for neurological and neurosurgical treatment.

The new building was inaugurated by her son, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, on her birthday, adding significance to the occasion. The expanded facility is expected to increase access to specialised treatment for the large number of neurological patients seeking care in the country.
