Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has inaugurated the modernised Osmani Udyan, a historic park in the capital, along with the newly built "July Memorial Monument" inside it.

He formally opened both structures at 10 am on Monday (October 19). The modernisation of the park and construction of the monument cost around Tk 50 crore. The monument has been built to preserve the memory of those killed in the July-August student-people's uprising and to highlight the sacrifices of those who took part in the movement.

Located opposite the Police Headquarters, the park has a lake with a fountain at its centre, visible shortly after the entrance. For visitors, it also has a modern library, a gym and a cafeteria.

Before the library, a flight of stairs on the left leads down to the space set aside for a proposed museum. The initiative aims to create an environment that combines history with recreation for visitors.

The July Memorial Monument stands at the centre of the park. Names of those killed in the July uprising are engraved on a steel plate set in its middle. Images of various events from the movement have also been permanently fixed to the inner side of the railing surrounding the monument.

The monument will let visitors learn about the history of the July-August student-people's uprising, the role of the protesters and the sacrifices of the martyrs. At the same time, the modernised Osmani Udyan is expected to serve as a new leisure and recreation spot for city residents.
