PM inaugurates teachers' retirement and welfare benefit distribution programme

Putting an end to years of waiting, the distribution of funds from the Retirement and Welfare Trust among private teachers and staff has begun. The programme was inaugurated at the Osmani Memorial Hall in the capital on Saturday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the distribution programme for retired teachers and staff. The initiative has been taken to alleviate the long-standing suffering of those who had been waiting for their dues.

It is learned that initially, the plan was to provide benefits from the Retirement and Welfare Trust to 1 lakh 19 thousand teachers and staff. Later, the number of beneficiaries was increased to 1 lakh 23 thousand.

Earlier, on August 6, at a meeting on various education matters at the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had given his consent to disburse funds from the Retirement and Welfare Trust to 1 lakh 19 thousand teachers and staff.

The meeting was attended by Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon, the Prime Minister's Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin and Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khaleq.

Those concerned said retired teachers and staff had been facing financial difficulties due to the long hold-up of retirement and welfare benefits. This new initiative is expected to alleviate the crisis for a large number of teachers and staff.
