Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the desalination of saline water as an alternative to reduce pressure on groundwater. He has also ordered feasibility studies at the river estuary in Chandpur and the coastal area of Mongla.

On Tuesday, August 25, the Danish Ambassador held a meeting with the Local Government Minister and State Minister at the Secretariat. Later, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shah Alam briefed the media about the discussions. He also said the treated water would be supplied across the country through pipelines, similar to gas pipelines.

After the meeting, the State Minister further said that 74 percent of Dhaka city's water is drawn from groundwater sources, which is risky.

The State Minister said the Tk 16,000 crore 'Sayedabad Project' is being implemented to bring water from the Meghna River. Through this, 95 crore litres of water will be supplied daily to Dhaka city.

He also said the Danish government will provide approximately Tk 4,500 crore in assistance for this project. Additionally, the Danish government is providing Tk 100 crore for water treatment in Rohingya camps.
