Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed Ferdousi Ahmed Misty, a BNP lawmaker elected to a reserved seat for women, to resign from Parliament.

The development was confirmed on Thursday afternoon by Atikur Rahman Ruman, the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary.

According to BNP sources, Misty has also been instructed to resign from the party. She is expected to submit her resignation to the Speaker of Parliament in line with the party’s decision, with Thursday being considered the likely day for the move.

The issue of Misty’s resignation came into focus following an attack, vandalism and alleged looting at the RADDA MCH-FP Centre, a maternal and child health facility in Mirpur, Dhaka, last Thursday night. Allegations were subsequently raised that BNP activists from different levels were involved in the incident.

Misty had served as a joint convener of the Dhaka North City BNP. The committee was dissolved on Wednesday night, following which speculation intensified over her possible resignation from both the party and Parliament.

Party sources said the incident at the RADDA health centre prompted discussions within the BNP at various levels. Her resignation from Parliament and the party reportedly followed those internal discussions.
