PM orders tough action against artificial fuel crisis, smuggling
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the Home Minister to take strict measures to prevent artificial crises and smuggling of fuel oil, despite adequate stocks in the country. It was also informed that the government is providing a subsidy of approximately Tk 200 crore per month to keep fuel prices stable.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam shared this information with journalists after a meeting of the government parliamentary committee at the Parliament building on Saturday, March 28.
He said although global fuel prices have risen due to the war situation in the Middle East, the government is making every effort to keep them under control in Bangladesh. However, some unscrupulous circles are trying to create an artificial crisis, and there have also been allegations of fuel smuggling across the border. The Home Minister has been instructed to take strict measures, including intensive operations, to stop these activities.
The Chief Whip said there is currently no shortage of fuel oil in the country. A ship carrying 200,000 metric tonnes has already arrived at the port, with another 200,000 metric tonnes on the way.
The Prime Minister has also directed MPs to remain vigilant in their respective areas. They have been asked to coordinate with district and local administrations to ensure no one hoards excess fuel and that fuel prices do not increase anywhere. The Energy Minister will provide detailed information on this matter under Rule 300 in the upcoming parliamentary session.
The meeting began with prayers and expressions of condolence for the passing of the Speaker's wife. Recent bus and train accidents were also discussed, with relevant ministers informing the parliamentary committee about steps taken to prevent future accidents.
The Chief Whip further said a new initiative has been taken to regularly provide detailed information to MPs, and such briefings will continue monthly. Decisions on forming parliamentary standing committees and other matters are expected soon.
