Prime Minister Tarique Rahman deposits 10 per cent of his monthly salary into the government treasury, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said. The minister also said the prime minister has called on cabinet members to follow suit if they are able.

The health minister made the remarks as the chief guest at an event organised by the Bangladesh Midwifery Society in the capital on Monday, July 6.

Speaking at a recent cabinet meeting, the prime minister said he has been making the donation consistently and will continue to do so, according to the health minister.

"Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said his father, BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, used to deposit 10 per cent of his salary into the government treasury every month to support the poor or for state needs," Sakhawat said.

He added that the prime minister's basic salary is Tk 1,15,000, and he deposits 10 per cent — Tk 11,500 — every month. The amount is transferred to the government treasury by cheque after being deposited into his salary account.

The health minister said the prime minister has requested cabinet members to do the same if possible.

He said the cabinet members have welcomed the initiative and reacted positively.
