PM seeks DP World investment, interest in free trade zones and rail-based ICDs

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on international logistics company DP World to come forward with investment in various sectors in Bangladesh, including free trade zones and rail-based inland container depots.

The Prime Minister made the call during a meeting with a delegation led by DP World Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, at the Secretariat on Thursday evening, October 8.

Assistant Press Secretary to the Prime Minister AKM Nazmul Haque said the meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest, including expanding trade and investment between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates and developing the port management and logistics sector.

The meeting also discussed the 15-year concession agreement signed between Bangladesh and DP World for the operation and modernisation of Chattogram Container Terminal. Under the agreement, DP World will handle the operation and maintenance of Chattogram Container Terminal and its overflow container yard.

The government expects that through this partnership, the modernisation and operational efficiency of the terminal will increase, along with strengthening the capacity of Bangladesh's port and logistics infrastructure.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister asked about the interest of DP World's delegation in new investment in Bangladesh, including setting up free trade zones and rail-based inland container depots. In response, the delegation expressed their interest in cooperation and investment in these sectors.

The Prime Minister called on DP World and other international investors to seize the investment opportunities in Bangladesh. At the same time, the meeting exchanged views on the potential for developing Bangladesh's port infrastructure, expanding regional trade and making the logistics system more modern, efficient and effective.
