PM Tarique Rahman meets Trump's Special Envoy Sergio Gor at PMO

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting with US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Sergio Gor at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in Tejgaon, where both sides discussed expanding Bangladesh-US relations alongside key regional and humanitarian issues, with particular emphasis on the Rohingya crisis.

According to Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony, the meeting began at 9:30am today (August 1) and focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding economic and diplomatic engagement, and exchanging views on issues of mutual interest.

The protracted Rohingya crisis featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides underscored the importance of a durable and long-term solution, reiterating support for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Earlier during his visit to Dhaka, Sergio Gor held bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman. Following the meeting, the United States revised its travel advisory for Bangladesh.

Under the updated advisory, Bangladesh's travel status has been upgraded from Level 3 ("Reconsider Travel") to Level 2 ("Exercise Increased Caution"), indicating that Washington now considers the country comparatively safer for travel than before.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US special envoy informed the foreign minister of the decision through a message after the meeting.

On the second day of his visit, Gor led an eight-member US delegation to the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, where the team visited Camp-8 West, Camp-6 and Camp-4 to assess ongoing humanitarian operations.

During the visit, Rohingya refugees displayed placards calling for their swift, safe, voluntary and dignified return to Myanmar. The delegation interacted with refugees and reviewed the overall humanitarian situation in the camps.

The visit is seen as part of broader efforts to deepen Bangladesh-US engagement on regional stability, humanitarian assistance and strategic cooperation.
