Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman paid tribute to the grave of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman on Saturday (May 30), marking the 45th anniversary of his martyrdom.

Leading senior party leaders and supporters, Tarique Rahman visited Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 11:00am, where floral wreaths were laid in honour of the late president.

Following the tribute, party leaders offered prayers, recited Surah Al-Fatiha and joined a special munajat, seeking eternal peace for Ziaur Rahman’s soul.

A large gathering of BNP leaders, activists and supporters attended the programme, reflecting the significance of the day for the party founded by Ziaur Rahman.

Among those present were BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, AZM Zahid Hossain and Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, State Minister for Sports Amilun Haque, alongside other senior leaders from both the party and the government.

Speaking on the occasion, BNP leaders remembered Ziaur Rahman’s role in Bangladesh’s independence struggle, his contributions to state-building and his political legacy, which they said continues to inspire new generations.

The tribute ceremony formed part of BNP’s nationwide eight-day programme commemorating the former president’s martyrdom anniversary. The schedule includes discussions, prayer gatherings, charitable activities and public outreach programmes across the country.

Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981, at the Chattogram Circuit House during an attempted military uprising. BNP has since observed the day annually as his martyrdom anniversary.
