Bogura is set to be formally elevated to a city corporation as part of a long-awaited administrative upgrade, with the inauguration scheduled for Monday (April 20).

According to official sources, the historic 150-year-old Bogura municipality has completed the process of becoming a city corporation following final approval at a pre-NICAR (National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization) secretariat committee meeting held on last Sunday.

The proposal was among eight development initiatives cleared during the session.

The inauguration will be carried out in Bogura by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as confirmed by Protocol Officer-1 Ujjal Hossain.

A notification signed by Senior Assistant Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Imtiaz Morshed, stated that the proposal to upgrade Bogura municipality into a city corporation, along with other development projects, was approved at the meeting.

Bogura municipality was previously expanded in 2006 during the tenure of then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, when surrounding 48 mauzas were incorporated, increasing its area to 69.56 square kilometers and expanding it from 12 to 21 wards. Plans to further upgrade it into a city corporation had remained stalled for years despite repeated demands.

Following the formation of the interim government, the proposal was revived by then-District Commissioner Hossna Afroza. A formal process involving public feedback, objections, and final reports was completed before being submitted to the ministry.

Local Government Division officials had earlier indicated that the announcement could come before Victory Day 2025, but the timeline was delayed until the current final approval.

With the latest decision, Bogura is now poised to officially join Bangladesh’s list of city corporations, marking a significant milestone in its administrative and urban development history.
