PM to leave for New York Monday to attend UN General Assembly session

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave for New York next Monday (September 21) to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. He will address the UN General Assembly session on September 24.

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to the United States, including New York, has been shortened. As a result, he will leave New York for Dhaka on the night of September 25, the day after his speech on September 24.

Several senior officials of the ministry said that initially, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's US visit was planned from September 21 to 29. Preparations were being made for him to travel from New York to San Francisco.

Government sources said that in the short visit to New York, the Prime Minister's entourage list is also small. Compared to previous governments, the short visit to the UN General Assembly session with a smaller delegation reflects the Prime Minister's austerity.

Speaking to officials of the Foreign Ministry, it was learned that during his stay in New York, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will hold several high-level UN meetings, a discussion hosted by Bangladesh, and separate bilateral discussions with top leaders of various countries.

Among the high-level UN meetings are development, pandemic prevention, sea-level rise and nuclear disarmament.

Additionally, Bangladesh is organising several discussions, including on the Rohingya issue, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Furthermore, Bangladesh's Prime Minister will hold meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, President of the European Council António Costa, World Bank President Ajay Banga and Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson. During the visit, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend a dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump.
