PM to visit flood-hit Chattogram on August 9, hand over 100 rebuilt houses

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit flood-affected areas in Chattogram for the first time after assuming office. The visit is scheduled for August 9. During the visit, he will inspect the flood-hit areas of Hathazari, Fatikchhari and Banshkhali upazilas. He will also distribute relief among the affected people and hand over government-built rehabilitation houses to beneficiaries.

Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibli said the schedule for the August 9 Chattogram visit has been finalised. During the visit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with the flood-affected people and review the progress of rehabilitation activities on the ground. He will formally hand over the newly built houses to the affected families .

Sources said construction work on the houses for flood-affected families in Hathazari, Fatikchhari and Banshkhali is almost complete. On the day of the visit, the Prime Minister will hand over the house keys to beneficiaries, distribute relief goods among the affected people and address a brief public gathering.

As part of the tour schedule, the Prime Minister will formally hand over 100 rebuilt houses in West Banshkhali with government funding. Administrative preparations have been stepped up in the area ahead of the visit. Helicopter pads and other necessary infrastructure are being set up for the Prime Minister's arrival.

Chattogram South District BNP Convener Idris Miah said preparations at the party level have begun centring the Prime Minister's visit. He and the party's member secretary have been called to the Prime Minister's Gulshan office for a meeting regarding the matter.

Chattogram Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Sharif Uddin said the administration is taking all necessary measures to ensure a smooth visit. After receiving the official schedule, all necessary arrangements will be completed according to the determined action plan.

It may be mentioned that following devastating floods caused by continuous heavy rainfall and hill torrents in the Chattogram region last July, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had issued several directives to the concerned administration for providing swift assistance to the affected people, strengthening relief operations and ensuring rehabilitation. In continuation of the rehabilitation activities, the newly built houses will be handed over to the affected families during this visit.
