PM urges athletes to stay apolitical, focus on representing country
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged professional athletes not to affiliate with any political party, emphasising that they represent the nation through their talent and performance rather than any group or faction.
He made the remarks during the launch of the Sports Allowance programme and the presentation of sports cards and awards to medal-winning athletes at international competitions on Monday (March 30), organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The Prime Minister praised the athletes for enhancing the country’s prestige through their achievements, noting that competition and challenges make victory more meaningful. Quoting Albert Einstein, he said, “The person who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”
Acknowledging the role of families, coaches, and all stakeholders, he stressed that sports is now recognised as a professional career globally, and Bangladesh has begun formalising it as such.
To ensure financial security, the government has introduced a salary structure and sports allowances for athletes, enabling them to pursue sports as a profession confidently.
He highlighted other government initiatives, including the Family Card, honourariums for religious leaders, canal excavation projects, the upcoming Farmers Card, and the Sports Card programme, which also covers athletes with physical disabilities.
Under the “Sports for All” initiative, efforts are underway to provide opportunities for marginalised and specially-abled individuals across the country.
The Prime Minister also announced the revival of the popular 1976 BTV programme “Notun Kuri” to nurture youth talent, with the nationwide 'Notun Kuri Sports' programme starting from April 30 in Sylhet.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reminded athletes that with patriotism, determination, and team spirit, no obstacle can block success. He urged them: “You are not representatives of any political party—you are representatives of Bangladesh. Play for your country, win, and elevate Bangladesh’s stature in global sports.”
