PM visits July Uprising Memorial Museum after inauguration

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (August 5) visited the July Uprising Memorial Museum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after formally inaugurating the facility on the occasion of July Mass Uprising Day.

Former chief adviser to the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, accompanied the prime minister during the tour.

The prime minister visited different galleries showcasing photographs, artefacts, official documents and other preserved materials related to the July 2024 mass uprising, which culminated in the fall of the then Awami League government.

Following the student-led uprising on August 5, 2024, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country. The interim government later decided to transform the former prime minister's official residence, Ganabhaban, into the July Uprising Memorial Museum. The proposal was approved by the Advisory Council on Dec. 24, 2024.

The museum preserves a wide range of materials documenting the 2024 movement, including photographs, personal belongings of those killed, letters, historical documents, newspaper archives and audio-visual records. It also presents exhibits detailing the events surrounding Sheikh Hasina's departure from office.

In addition, the museum features displays on alleged enforced disappearances, state repression, attacks on opposition political activists and violence during the July uprising. Exhibits have been arranged throughout the building, including galleries, corridors, balconies and outdoor spaces.

Among those present during the visit were Home Minister Salah Uddin Ahmed, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayem, the prime minister's information adviser Zahed Ur Rahman, and the prime minister's daughter Zaima Rahman.

Although the museum was formally inaugurated on Tuesday, it will open to the public from August 6. Visitors will be able to purchase tickets online, with admission set at Tk 50 for adults and Tk 25 for children.
