Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman’s motorcade briefly gave way to an ambulance on the Dhaka elevated expressway, in what officials described as a spontaneous decision prioritising an emergency medical case.

The incident occurred around 9:00am near the Karwan Bazar end of the expressway on Wednesday morning (May 6), as the Prime Minister was en route to his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

According to witnesses and officials, an ambulance approaching from behind the convoy with siren blaring was noticed by the Prime Minister’s security detail. Recognising the urgency, he instructed his security personnel to clear the way for the emergency vehicle.

Following the instruction, the convoy was adjusted and the ambulance was allowed to pass without delay.

Officials said the gesture temporarily disrupted the usual VIP protocol associated with high-level motorcades, underscoring the prioritisation of emergency medical services.

Such incidents are rarely seen in the capital, where traffic movement is often affected by VVIP movements. The brief episode has been widely described by onlookers as a spontaneous act reflecting sensitivity toward emergency situations.

No disruption to the prime minister’s schedule was reported following the incident.
