Police file case against 12 student leaders over clash during anti-rape march

A case has been filed against 12 people including Meghmallar Basu, president of the Dhaka University branch of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, for alleged attack on police during an anti-rape march.

Ramna Police Station SI Abul Khair filed the case on Tuesday (March 11) night as the plaintiff.

Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Faruk OC Golam Faruk said, “Twelve accused have been named in the case. None of the accused has been arrested yet. Efforts are underway to arrest the unknown absconding accused along with collecting their names and addresses. In addition, arrangements have been made for the treatment of the injured police members.”

Apart from Meghmalla Basu, other named accused in the case are Dhaka University's Ong-ong Marma (25), Eden College unit Samajtantrik Chhatra Front President Sumaiya Shahina (25), Jahangirnagar University's Chhatra Union leader Adrita Roy (23), Chhatra Federation leader Arman (30), Dhaka Metropolitan unit Chhatra Federation President Al Amin Rahman (25), Richard (26), Hasan Sikder (25), Simi Akhter (25), Soukat Arif (26), Main Ahmed (24) and Fahim Ahmed Chowdhury (25).

On Tuesday, a group of protesters locked into a clash with the police when they were on their way to submit a memorandum to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus as part of their ongoing anti-rape protests.

The clash took place in front of Intercontinental Dhaka around 3:20pm, said police.

The hotel is situated near the State Guest House Jamuna, which is the official residence of CA Yunus.

Ramna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Tariqul Islam told the media that the protesters were coming from Shahbag towards State Guest House Jamuna with a procession.

When the police stopped them at the intersection, the protesters clashed with the police, he said, adding that several policemen were injured in the incident.
