Police foil Awami League's plan: DMP Commissioner
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has claimed that the banned Awami League had planned to create sabotage and deteriorate the law and order situation on the occasion of their founding anniversary, but law enforcement agencies have foiled the plan.
He made the remarks during a briefing at the Husseini Dalan Imambara in Old Dhaka on Tuesday morning, June 23, after inspecting the security arrangements for the Tajia procession on the occasion of Ashura.
The commissioner said the Awami League had planned to hold processions and gatherings across the country to embarrass the government and create disorder. "We have foiled their plan so far. I hope they will not be able to hold any procession or gathering in the remaining hours," he said.
Police had received intelligence about the Awami League's plans and had been on alert for three days, he said. Security had been tightened at various checkpoints, including border areas, and mobile patrols had been increased.
To prevent Awami League supporters from entering the capital from other districts, surveillance had been increased at all entry points, including train stations and bus stations, he added.
