Police HQ warns against fraud using officials' names, photos

The Police Headquarters has urged the public to remain vigilant following a rise in fraud attempts on social media using the names and identities of government officials, including police personnel, to demand money or facilitate lobbying.

In a message sent on Tuesday (July 28), the Police Headquarters said complaints have been received that fraudsters are using the names and photos of senior officials from various government departments, including police, to send messages on social media demanding money and offering various types of lobbying.

Police said these fraudulent activities are not only extorting money from the public but also tarnishing the reputation of government institutions and responsible officials.

The Police Headquarters stated that just because a social media ID uses a government official's photo or identity, it should not be assumed to be the official's actual account or mobile number. The public has been urged not to respond to such messages and not to engage in any financial transactions.

Police advised that if anyone receives such fraudulent messages, they should contact the national emergency service 999, the CID's Cyber Police Centre or the DMP's Detective Branch (DB).

Police said they are on the highest alert to identify those involved in such fraud and take strict legal action against them.
