Police morale recovered in six months: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the morale of Bangladesh;s police force has improved significantly over the past six months, with law enforcement agencies now working at full capacity to maintain public safety.

Speaking at a Milad and prayer programme outside the BNP headquarters in the capital's Naya Paltan on Wednesday (August 26), he said the government inherited law enforcement agencies operating in a fragile environment following the 2024 student-led uprising.

"The morale and working environment of the police were extremely weak when we took office. We have been able to change that situation over the past six months," he said.

Salahuddin said the government is simultaneously working to modernise the police, improve their morale and strengthen their role as public servants. He claimed that authorities have been able to arrest suspects and bring them under the law shortly after crimes were committed.

Referring to the recent four-murder case in Rangpur, he said those responsible were brought to justice within a reasonable timeframe.

The minister said legal reforms are also underway for other law enforcement agencies to strengthen accountability. He acknowledged that major reforms cannot happen overnight but said the government aims to build a more professional and people-oriented police force.
