Political crowds swell around DU ahead of DUCSU election results
Dhaka University witnessed a growing presence of political activists and supporters around its main entrances and nearby areas following the conclusion of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election at 4 p.m on Tuesday.
Since the afternoon, several hundred people have gathered near the Democracy and Liberation Arch, with about 200 more at Bakshibazar intersection. The crowd at Palashi intersection was comparatively smaller.
Observers noted that groups of students and political activists were standing in front of key entrances, some quietly waiting while others gathered in clusters. Despite the visible crowd, most attendees declined to comment when approached, and political leaders refused to admit mobilizing supporters.
To maintain security, law enforcement personnel have been deployed across multiple entry points and within the campus, with police presence significantly increased compared to previous years.
This year’s DUCSU election, held after six years, saw voting at 810 booths across eight centers. A total of 471 candidates, including 62 women, contested 28 positions, such as Vice-President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary.
