Pori Moni gets bail after surrendering in assault case
Bangladeshi film actress Pori Moni was granted bail on Thursday after she surrendered to a Dhaka court, a day after it issued an arrest warrant against her in a case in which she is accused of assaulting, vandalising property and threatening businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud.
Pori Moni arrived at the court of the Dhaka senior judicial magistrate at about 9:30 a.m., according to court sources. Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman heard her bail petition and granted bail after the hearing on a bond of 500 taka.
The case had been scheduled for witness testimony on Wednesday. Pori Moni did not appear in court that day and instead sought more time through her lawyer, Nilanjana Rifat Surovi.
Her lawyer told the media she was unable to attend because of an allergy-related health problem. Abul Kalam Mohammad Sohel, a lawyer for the complainant, objected to the request and applied for her bail to be cancelled. The court rejected the request for more time and issued a warrant for her arrest. It also set Dec. 23 as the next date for witness testimony.
The case stems from an incident at the Dhaka Boat Club on the night of June 8, 2021. A few days later, Pori Moni alleged at a news conference that she had been subjected to attempted rape and attempted murder that night. On June 13, she filed a case against Nasir Uddin. He was arrested in that case and later released on bail. The trial is still under way at the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
About a year later, on July 6, 2022, Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed a counter-case. He alleged that Pori Moni went to the Boat Club on the night of the incident and assaulted, vandalised and threatened him. After an investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report saying it had found the allegations to be true. The court accepted the report and summoned Parimoni to appear.
In 2025, an arrest warrant was also issued against Pori Moni in the same case after she failed to appear in court on the day charges were framed. She surrendered the following day and was granted bail.
