President can resign on health grounds, government has no role here: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government has nothing to say on whether the President has resigned. However, if he wishes on health grounds, he can submit his resignation to the Speaker. There is a constitutional procedure for this, and the government has no role to play in the matter.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday (July 23).

Earlier, an inter-ministerial meeting on the development projects of Cox's Bazar and its transformation into a tourist city was held at the Ministry of Finance's conference room at the Secretariat. The Home Minister, the Finance Minister, the Land Minister and officials from several other ministries attended the meeting.

In response to a question from journalists about speculation over the President's resignation, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "Speculation is just speculation. If it becomes a reality, then we will also see."

When asked whether the President had spoken over the phone with Sheikh Hasina during her medical treatment abroad, the Home Minister said, "I do not know anything about this."

The Home Minister also spoke about the constitutional process for the President's resignation. He said if the President wishes to resign, he must submit his resignation letter to the Speaker according to the rules. The matter will then be resolved through the subsequent constitutional process.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government has taken up a master plan to develop Cox's Bazar as a tourist city, through which Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar will be transformed into a tourism hub. He added that the government is also taking up larger projects to make Bangladesh more profitable by utilising the deep sea.
