President Fakhrul pays tribute to Liberation War martyrs at Savar
Newly sworn-in President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on Saturday morning (August 22).
The president arrived at the memorial at 10:22am and laid a wreath at the altar to honour the war heroes. A smartly turned-out contingent of the three armed forces presented him with a guard of honour.
After laying the wreath, Fakhrul stood in silence for a while in solemn remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War.
He later signed the visitors’ book at the memorial, recording his reflections on the visit.
Security was tightened across the memorial premises and surrounding areas ahead of the president's visit.
Fakhrul took oath as the country's 23rd president at the Bangabhaban Durbar Hall on Friday night. Acting Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal administered the oath, while Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani conducted the ceremony.
