President Md. Shahabuddin resigns

Ending all speculation, Md. Shahabuddin has resigned from the post of President. He himself confirmed his resignation to the media on Friday afternoon.

While talking to a media outlet on WhatsApp, the President said, "It is well known, what is the use of hearing it from my mouth? I am sick, so it is done."

In response to a question about whether the resignation letter has been signed, he said, "I told you, you understand."

Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has called an emergency press conference at the oath-taking room of the National Parliament Building at 5pm on Friday to inform about the acceptance of the President's resignation letter.

A source close to the President said that he submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker around 4pm on Friday, citing "personal reasons." The source claims that he resigned due to personal reasons, not political pressure.

Earlier, the Speaker, who returned to the country two days ahead of schedule after receiving medical treatment in Thailand, told reporters that he was not aware of the president's resignation. However, according to the constitution, when a president resigns, the resignation letter is submitted to the Speaker and the National Parliament elects a new president within 90 days. Until then, the Speaker serves as the acting president.

Md. Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. He previously served as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission and later held a top position in Islami Bank.

Since the political upheaval on August 5, 2024, there have been demands for his resignation. Several political parties, including the anti-discrimination student movement, demanded his removal, but the interim government did not move in that direction, citing constitutional reasons.

Later, during the interim government, the president's role outside of state formalities became limited. In an interview given to Reuters in December 2025, he said that he felt humiliated and wanted to leave office.

Talks of a presidential change resurfaced after the formation of a new government in February this year. He ultimately resigned before the end of his term.
