President orders police to end extrajudicial killings, harassment

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has directed the police to take effective measures to stop extrajudicial killings, harassment of ordinary citizens and filing of false cases. He also emphasised taking urgent steps to establish the rule of law.

The President gave the directives during a courtesy meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir at Bangabhaban on Thursday, September 3. The discussion covered the country's law and order situation and police activities. The President instructed the IGP to take necessary measures to establish the rule of law and protect citizens' rights.

The President said police must play a more effective role in combating cybercrime, including the spread of misinformation and rumours. He also directed authorities to take necessary measures to prevent snatching, extortion, drug proliferation and ensure the safety of women and children. The President also stressed the importance of regularly informing the public about these issues and creating widespread public awareness.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the current government is working to uphold people's fundamental human rights and democratic rights. To achieve this goal, he directed police to continue effective measures to stop extrajudicial killings, harassment of citizens and filing of false cases.

The President urged police personnel to perform their duties with honesty, integrity and professionalism to maintain the country's law and order and combat crime. He also emphasised making the police force an institution that enjoys public trust.

During the meeting, the IGP briefed the President on various initiatives taken to boost police morale, modernise the force and digitise its operations. He also sought the President's overall cooperation in performing their duties. In response, the President assured the police force of necessary support. The President's Military Secretary and Press Secretary were also present at the meeting.
