President, PM pay tribute to martyrs on Independence Day
President Md Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have paid deep tributes to the valiant martyrs of the Liberation War by laying wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar, Dhaka, on the occasion of the Great Independence Day.
The President and Prime Minister jointly laid wreaths at the altar of the National Memorial at 6:00 am on Thursday, March 26.
After laying the wreaths, they stood in silence for some time to honour the memory of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
A smart contingent of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute at the time. A sombre bugle tune was played. The President and Prime Minister signed the visitors' book kept at the memorial premises.
Leaders of various parties and organisations later paid their tributes one by one. Leaders of the opposition, led by Dr Shafiqur Rahman, also paid their respects to the martyrs.
