President resigns due to serious illness: Bangabhaban

Md. Shahabuddin has resigned from the post of President due to 'serious health complications'. He submitted his resignation to Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Friday. The Speaker accepted the resignation at 5:01pm.

This information was given in a notification signed by the President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam.

The notification said that in his resignation letter to the Speaker, the President mentioned that he is seriously ill. He is suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. He underwent bypass surgery on his heart and was diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy in a recent health check.

The President wrote in his resignation letter that due to this disease, he sometimes loses consciousness for a moment. Due to physical and mental incapacity caused by various diseases, it is no longer possible for him to perform the important constitutional duties of the President. In this situation, he needs long-term treatment.

He further stated that he is resigning from the office of President in accordance with the provisions of Article 50(3) of the Constitution.

According to Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker of the National Parliament shall perform the duties of the President until a new President is elected and assumes office.

It is to be noted that Md. Shahabuddin assumed office as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. His resignation brought to an end his term as President of nearly three years and three months.
