Presidential election to be held August 20

The Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the country's presidential election, with voting set for August 20, formally launching the process to elect the nation's next head of state.

The schedule was unveiled on Thursday (August 6) by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, formally launching the constitutional process to elect the country's next head of state.

According to the timetable, nomination papers will be accepted on August 13 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for August 16, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is August 18.

If multiple candidates remain in the race, voting will take place from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on August 20 in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin will serve as the returning officer for the election. Nomination submission and scrutiny will be conducted at the CEC's office.

Under the Presidential Election Act, 1991, the President is elected by Members of Parliament. Each nomination must be proposed and seconded by two MPs, while the candidate must also provide written consent. If only one valid candidate remains after the nomination process, the individual will be declared elected unopposed, eliminating the need for a vote.

Election officials noted that presidential elections in Bangladesh are typically uncontested, with the ruling party's nominee often elected without a ballot. If that scenario is repeated, the country's next President could effectively be confirmed on August 18, the final day for withdrawal of candidacy.

The last contested presidential election was held in 1991, following the restoration of parliamentary democracy. Every presidential election since then has resulted in an uncontested victory for the governing party's nominee.

The election became necessary after President Md. Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing health reasons. In accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been serving as Acting President until a successor is elected. The Constitution requires the election to be completed within 90 days of the presidency becoming vacant.

Ahead of the schedule announcement, the EC consulted the Speaker on July 27 and obtained the parliamentary electoral roll from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat on August 3.

Political discussions over potential nominees have already intensified. Speaking in Rangpur on July 27, BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said his party would nominate a candidate at the appropriate time in accordance with the Constitution.
