Primary schools to remain open on Saturday
All government primary schools across the country will remain open and continue regular classes on Saturday (May 23).
The decision was confirmed by the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE).
In an official order signed by Assistant Director (General Administration) Sajjad Hossain, the DPE said that according to directives from the Ministry of Public Administration and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, offices will remain open on May 23 (Saturday) and May 24 (Sunday). The Eid-ul-Azha holidays will then run from May 25 to May 31 for all government, semi-government, autonomous, and private institutions.
The DPE clarified that since Saturday is being treated as a working day, schools will operate normally with full academic activities.
An official from the department said, “Classes and regular teaching activities will continue as usual on Saturday.”
Earlier, uncertainty had arisen over whether schools would remain open due to confusion linked to a directive on the Mid-Day Meal programme, which suggested suspension of food distribution from that day. The notice led many to assume that schools might also remain closed.
To make up for academic losses during Ramadan and previous holidays, 10 Saturdays had already been declared working days. However, conflicting instructions regarding school operations and meal distribution created confusion at field level, leaving district and upazila education officials unable to provide clear guidance.
With the latest directive, authorities have now resolved all ambiguity, confirming that academic activities will proceed as scheduled on Saturday.
