Government Primary school teachers across the country have suspended their ongoing “complete shutdown” programme, prompting annual examinations for all grades to resume from Sunday (December 7).

The Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council and the Bangladesh Primary Assistant Teachers Unity Council jointly made the announcement on Saturday (December 6).

In a statement, they cited moral responsibility and concern for young students as the reason for pausing the shutdown until exams conclude. Future actions will be decided after discussions between the two councils.

The shutdown had been in effect since December 3, with assistant teachers demanding implementation of three key demands: upgrading their pay scale from 10th to 11th grade, simplifying the promotion process at 10- and 16-year milestones, and ensuring full departmental promotion from assistant to head teacher.
