Prime Minister greets newly elected President with red rose

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has greeted and congratulated BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with a red rose after he was elected the 23rd President of Bangladesh.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Returning Officer AMM Nasir Uddin announced the results of the presidential election after the vote counting in the session hall of the National Parliament around 5:15pm on Thursday (August 20).

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected President with 255 votes in the announced results. His rival candidate of the 11-party opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed got 88 votes.

Parliament members congratulated the newly elected President by thumping the tables after the announcement of results. Mirza Fakhrul also raised his hand and responded to their greetings. Then Prime Minister Tarique Rahman rose from his seat, shook hands with Mirza Fakhrul and greeted him with flowers.

Opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman, deputy leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher and other opposition parliament members later came towards the treasury bench. Mirza Fakhrul rose from his seat and first embraced Shafiqur Rahman. Later Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also came forward and embraced him. Then Tarique Rahman and Shafiqur Rahman embraced each other.

Parliament members of the ruling and opposition parties later exchanged greetings with the newly elected President. A festive atmosphere was created in the session hall of the National Parliament at that time.
