Prime Minister Tarique Rahman enjoyed the game of young footballers in the final phase of the country's largest primary sports competition 'Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament (Boys-Girls)' sitting on the field.
Arriving at the capital's Army Stadium around 4 pm on Saturday, he enjoyed the final match from the gallery and participated in hoisting the national flag with young students.
In the final of the girls' division of the tournament, Achargaon Government Primary School in Nandail Upazila of Mymensingh and Jorgachha United Government Primary School in Santhia Upazila of Pabna faced each other. The Prime Minister was present in this match mainly as a spectator.
Earlier, in the final of the boys' division, Darial Mia Government Primary School in Bakerganj Upazila of Barisal defeated Darirampur Model Government Primary School in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh by 1-0 goals to become the champion.
The organizers said that about 2.2 million students from more than 65,000 government primary schools in the country participated in this year's competition. Starting from the village level, the best teams passed through the union, upazila, district and divisional stages and made it to the final round.
Education and primary education sector officials believe that this tournament is a major initiative to find grassroots talent. Plans have also been announced to increase participation in the next edition by adding at least 5 million students.
