Prime Minister takes responsibility for Ramisa’s elder sister
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken responsibility for the education and welfare of the elder sister of seven-year-old Ramisa Akter, who was brutally raped and murdered in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
The announcement came after the Prime Minister visited the grieving family in Pallabi on Thursday night (May 21) following a Cabinet meeting.
During the visit, she offered condolences and assured the family of a swift and thorough investigation into the killing.
According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, the Prime Minister personally pledged support for the victim’s surviving sister, assuring that her education and related expenses would be fully covered.
Addressing the family, the Prime Minister said justice would be ensured at any cost and urged them to remain strong during the tragedy.
“This injustice must be punished first. One child has been taken by God, but another is still with you. You must stay strong for her,” she said.
The visit was attended by senior officials including the Law Minister, the State Minister for Youth and Sports, and the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation, among others.
The incident has triggered nationwide outrage after Ramisa’s mutilated body was recovered from a flat in Pallabi earlier this week. Police later arrested two suspects — Sohail Rana (30), a neighbouring tenant, and his wife Swapna Akter (26).
Investigators said Sohail Rana later gave a confessional statement under Section 164 before a Dhaka court, detailing the rape and murder of the child. Both accused have since been sent to jail following court orders.
Police said the victim was killed inside the flat and her body was later dismembered. Authorities also confirmed that the accused attempted to flee the scene but were later arrested from different locations, including Narayanganj.
A case was filed with Pallabi Police Station on the same day of the incident, as public outrage continues to grow across the country over the brutal killing.
