Probe report names Zafar Iqbal, ex-DU VC Maksud in July uprising case

Investigators have submitted a probe report against eight individuals, including noted author and academic Muhammed Zafar Iqbal and former University of Dhaka Vice-Chancellor ASM Maksud Kamal, in a crimes against humanity case over the alleged attack on Dhaka University students during last year's July Uprising.

The development was confirmed on Thursday (August 6) by Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, who said the investigation report is currently under review by the prosecution.

According to Tamim, prosecutors will examine the findings before filing formal charges with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to initiate trial proceedings.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam also confirmed that a formal charge sheet would be submitted to the tribunal after completing the legal review of the investigation report.

Besides Maksud Kamal and Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, those named in the report include former Justice ABM Nizamul Huq, University of Dhaka Sociology Professor AKM Jamal Uddin, and Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Wali Asif Inan, among others.

Prosecution officials said the investigation was conducted over allegations that university students were attacked during the July Uprising. With the investigation now complete, the case is moving into the prosecution phase, paving the way for formal judicial proceedings before the International Crimes Tribunal.
