Prof Fazlul Huq to be laid to rest at Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard

Eminent political thinker, writer, researcher and Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq will be laid to rest at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard on Monday (July 6) following a series of state and public tributes in the capital.

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to pay their final respects to the veteran scholar, whose death on Sunday has left Bangladesh's academic, literary and cultural communities in deep mourning.

His body was brought to the Shaheed Minar around 11:00am, where academics, writers, students, cultural personalities and people from all walks of life offered floral tributes and bid an emotional farewell.

Following the homage at the Shaheed Minar, his body was taken to Aparajeyo Bangla on the University of Dhaka campus, where the public was given another opportunity to pay their last respects.

His second funeral prayer (janaza) will be held after Zuhr at the University of Dhaka Central Mosque, after which he will be buried at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard.

Earlier in the day, Prof Fazlul Huq's body was taken to Bangla Academy, where Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam, officials, colleagues and admirers paid their respects. He served as president of the Bangla Academy until his death.

Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq died on Sunday after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. He was 86.

His passing has drawn an outpouring of grief across the country, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, former Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and several political, literary and cultural organisations paying tribute to his enduring contributions to Bangladesh's intellectual and cultural life.
