Prosecution delivers opening statement against humanity case against Sheikh Hasina
The prosecution has delivered its opening statement in the high-profile case of genocide and crimes against humanity against Sheikh Hasina and three others, in connection with the deadly crackdown during the July mass movement.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, speaking before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 at approximately 11:30am, said, “Sheikh Hasina is the nucleus of all crimes committed.”
He detailed the charges and outlined the state’s case before the three-member tribunal.
Among the three other accused, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has turned state witness and was produced from prison to testify. He has already admitted responsibility for crimes against humanity. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, also charged, remains absconding.
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman earlier urged the tribunal to impose the highest penalty permitted under existing law.
Today’s hearing also marked the start of witness testimony, with proceedings broadcast live on state-run BTV, following special approval from the tribunal. The bench is chaired by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, with Justices Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury as members.
The tribunal formally charged Sheikh Hasina and the other accused on July 10, framing five counts of genocide and crimes against humanity. The court had scheduled August 3 for the opening statement and initial witness testimony.
