Anger and grief intensified for a third consecutive day in Dhaka’s Mirpur as protests continued over the brutal killing of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter, with demonstrators demanding a speedy trial and the maximum punishment for those responsible.

Locals, students from various institutions, and people from different professions have gathered repeatedly in front of the victim’s residence in Pallabi and around Pallabi Police Station, staging demonstrations and blocking nearby areas at intervals.

Protesters said the incident was not a routine crime but a “heinous and unacceptable act,” urging authorities to ensure a speedy trial through a special tribunal. They also expressed deep concern over growing insecurity for children.

“We no longer feel safe sending our children outside or even keeping them safe at home,” said one guardian, reflecting broader anxiety among residents. Others pointed to the rise of drug abuse and criminal activity in the area as contributing factors behind such incidents.

The victim’s father, Abdul Hannan Molla, expressed gratitude to the protesters, saying he did not call for any movement but that people had voluntarily come forward demanding justice for his daughter.

Police said legal proceedings against the accused are underway and the investigation into the case is continuing. Authorities have assured that necessary legal steps will be taken to ensure justice.
