Protest rally held demanding unconditional release of Tasnim Afroze Imi
A protest rally was held at Dhaka University demanding the unconditional release of former VP of Shamsunnahar Hall Students’ Union, Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Imi, who was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The demonstration took place on Saturday (April 26) at the base of Raju Sculpture under the banner of “Anti-Repression Citizens’ Society,” where speakers called for her immediate release and inclusion in efforts to build a “new Bangladesh.”
Speakers at the rally questioned the current legal actions, alleging that Imi had been detained in a politically motivated case.
Nahidul Islam, a prominent figure of the July mass uprising, criticised the situation and demanded her release, arguing there is no legal basis to restrict slogans like “Joy Bangla” or the broadcast of the March 7 speech.
Participants warned of tougher movement if Imi is not released soon.
Representatives from various organisations and students joined the rally, echoing the same demands.
Imi was arrested on March 8 along with two others in a case filed at Shahbagh Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. They were later sent to jail following a court order.
