Protests, road blockades across country over Osman Hadi's death
Students and the public have been protesting and blocking roads across the country over the death of Inqilab Mancha convener and independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency Sharif Osman Hadi. As news of his death spread, general public in various districts including the capital Dhaka became agitated.
Protests in Jhalokati and Pirojpur:
People from various political parties and professions, including NCP, civil rights organizations, and others, protested by setting fire to the highway in Jhalokati. In Pirojpur, a protest procession was taken out by the All-Party Student Unity Council and circled important roads in the city. Speakers demanded the immediate arrest and trial of the killers.
Movements in Kishoreganj and Lakshmipur:
The procession that started in front of the Shaheed Mosque in Kishoreganj turned into a road blockade before going to the office of the Superintendent of Police. A protest march took out from Uttar Temuhani Traffic Square in Lakshmipur. Slogans were raised there: 'Brother Hadi's blood, we will not let it go in vain' and 'Bharat's brokers, be careful'.
Tense situation in Gazipur and the capital:
In Gazipur, various organizations including Duet students protested by blocking roads. In Dhaka, Shimultali Road and Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway were blocked, causing traffic to stop. Thousands of students and people participated in the protest in Dhaka University and Shahbagh areas.
Protesters' demands:
The protesters demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in Hadi's murder. According to them, Sharif Osman Hadi's death will be a symbol of the ongoing movement against Indian hegemony and the people of the country will no longer accept such atrocities.
On December 12, Sharif Osman Hadi was shot from a motorcycle in the Box-Culvert area of Bijoynagar in the capital. He was treated in a critical condition first at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later at Evercare Hospital. He was taken to Singapore on December 15 for advanced treatment, where he died on December 18 while undergoing treatment.
