Rain, gusty winds forecast in 8 regions including Dhaka

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in eight regions, including Dhaka, before Monday afternoon.

According to the department’s river port warning issued for 5am to 1pm Monday (August 24), gusty winds from the south or southeast may sweep across Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. Wind speeds may reach 45-60 kilometres per hour in these areas, prompting authorities to hoist local river port warning signal No. 1.

In Dhaka and adjoining areas, the sky may remain partly cloudy to temporarily overcast from 7am to 1pm, with rain or thundershowers possible. Southerly or southeasterly winds may blow at 10-15 kilometres per hour.

The weather department said rainfall could bring a slight drop in daytime temperatures. At 6am, Dhaka recorded 26.9°C with 97 percent humidity. The capital received 5mm of rain in the previous 24 hours, while the highest temperature recorded there on Sunday was 34.8°C.

The department's 24-hour forecast from 6pm Sunday also indicated widespread rainfall across the country. Many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds.

Moderate to heavy rain is also likely in places in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

The department said the monsoon remains fairly active over Bangladesh, with rain likely to continue in different parts of the country over the next few days.
