Ramisa murder case: Death reference of two convicts on HC list

The appeals and death references of the two convicts sentenced to death in the case over the rape and brutal murder of seven-year-old Ramisa in Pallabi, Mirpur, have been placed on the High Court's cause list.

The case has been listed at serial no 22 for Sunday, August 16, before the High Court bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice K M Rasheduzzaman Raja.

On May 19, Ramisa was raped and killed. After the incident, prime accused Sohail Rana fled by cutting the window grille of the house but was later arrested by police from Fatullah in Narayanganj. Meanwhile, his wife Swapna was taken into custody from the scene after police were alerted through the national emergency service 999.

Ramisa's father filed a case with Pallabi Police Station. On May 21, Sohail Rana gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The same day, the case was sent to the tribunal for trial.

On May 25, the case's investigating officer, Pallabi Police Station Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman, submitted a charge sheet against Sohail Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter.

On June 1, formal trial began with the framing of charges against the two accused. The following day, the testimony of 16 prosecution witnesses was completed in a single day. On June 3, the accused were examined under Section 342 of the CrPC. On June 7, Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal Judge Masrur Salequeen delivered the verdict.

The tribunal said the accused must be hanged by the neck until death, subject to High Court approval under Section 374 of the CrPC. Sohail was also fined Tk 5 lakh and Swapna Tk 2 lakh, with the fine money to be given to Ramisa's legal heirs.
