The death sentence verdict in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa Akhtar in Pallabi, Mirpur, is an important milestone in the judicial process, said Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal, the country's chief legal officer.

He made this comment at a press conference organized at the Supreme Court on Sunday (June 7). In an immediate reaction after the verdict was announced, he said that the trial of the case has been completed in such a short time because all state agencies worked together. According to him, the speedy completion of the trial is a reflection of the implementation of the state's commitment.

Earlier on the same day, the Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal Court in Dhaka announced the verdict in the case. Judge Masroor Salekin sentenced the accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Khatun to death. The sentence was also given under Section 9(2) of the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act.

The court also imposed a fine of five lakh taka on Sohel Rana and two lakh taka on Swapna Khatun. The fine amount has been ordered to be paid to the legal heirs of the victim Ramisa. The court also ordered the defendants to sell their immovable and movable properties to recover compensation if they fail to pay the fine.
