Ramisa murder case death row convict Sohel Rana has apologized for his crime during an appeal hearing in the High Court.

In his statement given in the court, he claimed that he was mentally disturbed due to extreme financial crisis, family unrest and drug addiction. He told the court that the incident took place in that situation.

During the hearing on Sunday (June 14), Sohel Rana explained his position and said that he is a very low-income person. He worked as a mechanic in an auto-rickshaw garage by profession and had been addicted to various types of drugs, including Yaba, for a long time.

He also mentioned that there were often quarrels and unrest in the family due to drug addiction.

In his statement given in the court, Sohel Rana claimed that he was in a drug-addicted state at the time of the incident. He became mentally unbalanced due to financial hardship, family instability and drug addiction. According to him, he did not do the incident planned and could not understand the situation at that time.

He also told the court that he had never been involved in any criminal activity before. Considering the future of his only child, he sought mercy and forgiveness from the court.

He said that in his absence, there is no one to take care of the family and if the death sentence is carried out, his children and family will face extreme uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Swapna Akhter, another accused sentenced to death in the same case and wife of Sohel Rana, has claimed complete innocence. She has appealed to the court for acquittal.

According to court sources, on June 11, the two convicts filed separate jail appeals through the jail authorities. The High Court accepted their appeals for hearing on Sunday. In the next hearing, the High Court will give the necessary decision after reviewing the case documents, evidence and the verdict of the trial court.

The rape and murder of child Ramisa was widely discussed across the country. After the trial of the case, the court concerned awarded death sentence to Sohel Rana and Swapna Akhter. Later, they appealed against the lower court verdict. The judgement is currently pending in the Appellate Division.
