Record 1,163 dengue detected in one day, 4 more deaths

The Directorate General of Health Services has reported that the infection of dengue is increasing rapidly in the country. Four more people have died after being infected with dengue in the last 24 hours. In the same period 1,163 new patients have been detected, which is the highest in one day this year.

This information was given in the regular dengue-related press release of the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Monday (August 31). With the addition of the information of new patients and deaths the number of deaths from dengue this year has increased to 97.

According to the calculation of the Directorate General of Health Services, a total of 35,846 people have been admitted to hospital after being infected with dengue in the country from January 1 to August 31. In the previous 24 hours 1,097 patients had been admitted to hospital and three had died. The number of new patients detected has increased further within one day.

The outbreak of dengue has increased the most in the current month itself. The number of patients admitted to hospital after being infected with dengue in August till August 30 was more than 19,000. Deaths have also increased significantly in the same month compared to the previous months.

According to the statistics of the Directorate General of Health Services, although the number of dengue-infected has increased gradually from the beginning of this year the pace of infection has become more intense in August after June and July. In the entire period of last year 413 people had died from dengue and 1,02,861 had been infected in the country.

The record of detecting new patients in one day and the continuity of deaths have created new concern over the dengue situation. The concerned are giving importance on controlling the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes in the rainy season, removing accumulated water and taking treatment quickly if the symptoms of fever appear.
